Situated in the remote reaches of the solar system\, far from the Sun\, Saturn has been a planet of mystery\, drawing the attention of astronomers ever since Galileo discovered the rings with his telescope. \nNASA’s Cassini spacecraft orbited Saturn for over a decade\, exploring the planet and its moons and making truly astounding discoveries that changed the way we think of planets and objects that orbit them. Cassini carried the Huygens probe that landed on Saturn’s moon Titan\, the first ever landing on any body in the outer solar system. \nCome join us for a voyage of discovery of how this marvelous feat was accomplished and what Cassini told us about Saturn\, its moons and its phenomenal ring system. \nArmed with a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering and an MS in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT\, Harley started working at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab in 1978. He spent most of his time there working on the Galileo spacecraft that eventually orbited Jupiter. Harley made Aliyah in 1981 and worked in the technology sector until retiring in 2019. He has been living in Netanya since 1984. Its development since biblical times\, if not before\, is a fascinating account of practitioners\, innovations and controversies. During its evolution\, especially in the Western World and Middle East\, Jews were involved in its practice and development. Detailed mentions in the Mishna\, Shulchan Aruch and in the writings of Rashi and the Rambam\, combined with the often hidden history of more modern Jewish practitioners and innovators\, has led Len to ask:  Massage – Is it Jewish?\n\nProfessor Len Goldstone had a busy academic career as Lecturer\, Dean and Full Professor of Applied Statistics at several UK Universities\, plus Visiting Professorships in Ireland and Texas\, US\, specialising in Health Service Research and Medical Audit. He took early retirement in the year 2000\, in order to join the British Ministry of Justice as a Lord Chancellor’s Visitor\, an Independent Advisor to the Judicial System in relation to Powers of Attorney. He finally retired in 2020. \n\nAuthor of several books on Statistics\, his last book took a surprisingly different direction. Essays on Massage History 1750-1950 (published in 2024) is the culmination of Len’s passion for this fascinating subject\, developed during his wife Jennifer’s career as a Nurse and Remedial Masseur.\n\nLen and Jennifer made Aliya from the UK in 2022 and have made Netanya ( and the AACI) their home. SUMMARY:Laurence Seeff: Jews in Jazz
DESCRIPTION:Laurence Seeff: Jews in Jazz\n19:30 Sunday 18 January\n\nJazz music took hold at the turn of the 20th century and especially from the 1920s. It emerged from the development of blues and ragtime and\, for more than a half a century\, it reigned supreme. Jews played a major part in the development of jazz as musicians\, composers\, lyricists\, managers\, businessmen and entrepreneurs. Although only a small percentage of the population in general\, Jews had a massively disproportionate influence on jazz.  In this lecture\, no less than 127 people are identified who have contributed to the genre in some way and\, together with narrative and video clips\, the lecture should provide an enlightening history of Jews in jazz.\n\nLaurence Seeff was born in 1951 in London. He studied statistics at Cardiff  University and the first phase of his career was as a statistician at the International Energy Agency (OECD) in Paris. He went on a contract for two years but\, in fact\, stayed for ten! Et oui! He then joined the fledgling Bloomberg Financial Markets\, in London\, as the first European employee when there was a total of just 35 staff (now 23\,000). After two decades\, in a variety of positions\, he became a lecturer in finance at BPP Professional Education in London.\n\nIn addition to his remunerated work\, Laurence served as a magistrate (voluntary lay judge in the criminal courts) for 20 years and has many stories with which to entertain at dinner parties.\n\nLaurence\, and his wife Sara\, made Alyah\, in November 2020\, to join their four children\, and now\, ten grandchildren.  In Israel\, Laurence has involved himself in amateur dramatics and tennis\, is an author\, and has published two books of poetry in 2017 and 2024.  Laurence’s interest in jazz dates back more than 50 years from when he first saw  Terry Lightfoot and his Jazzmen in a pub in Bournemouth. DESCRIPTION:Cities: How Do Artists Express the Bustling Sights and Sounds of Lively New York and Paris \nPresented by Judy Spitzberg  \nTuesday 28 October  at 11:30 \nEnjoy the paintings of Edward Hopper\, Robert Delauney and Piet Mondrian depicting famous cities with music of George Gershwin and Edgard Varse who describe their impressions of the sights and sounds of New York and Paris\, in lines\, shapes\, colours\, sounds and lyrics. We will sing along with Petula Clark’s “Downtown” describing the beat and vibe of the city and other fun interactive activities. \nJudy Spitzberg is a music and arts lecturer and director in several American and Israeli elementary schools\, universities\, orchestras and museums.
