SUMMARY:Dr. Avraham Roos: The Secret Lives of Words
DESCRIPTION:The Secret Lives of Words\nPresented by Dr. Avraham Roos\n19:30 Tuesday 24 November \n\nHave you ever wondered why October is the tenth month when its name means “eight\,” how a sandwich got its name\, or what a jeep\, a tulip\, and a slogan have in common? The Secret Lives of Words takes you on an entertaining journey through the surprising origins of English vocabulary. Discover how words are borrowed from other languages\, created from names and places\, shortened\, blended\, reshaped\, and sometimes completely transformed in meaning. Behind many ordinary words lie extraordinary stories—and after this lecture\, you may never look at the English language in quite the same way again. \n\n\nDr. Avraham Roos is an experienced educator\, linguist\, and public speaker who has lectured widely to English-speaking adult audiences throughout Israel on subjects ranging from Jewish history and culture to language\, art\, and general history. Born in the Netherlands\, he made aliyah in 1991 and has since built a long career in education\, including teaching in the English Departments of several teacher-training colleges\, where he has trained future English teachers in language and methodology. Dr. Roos holds an MA from the University of Liverpool and a PhD from the University of Amsterdam\, where his research focused on the history and development of English translations of the Passover Haggadah. His lectures combine scholarly depth with accessible storytelling\, personal insight\, humor\, and a strong visual dimension\, making complex and sometimes unexpected topics engaging for a broad adult audience.\n\n\n\nMembers pre-paid NIS 40\nMembers at door and non-members NIS 60 \nPurchase tickets below\, call the box office 09-8330950 (Sunday-Thursday 8:30-12:30) or pay at the door (cash only). \nPrepaid tickets available until noon on the day of this event. \nNearby Parking: (one block north of Netanya AACI\, approach from the north on Shmuel Hanatziv to turn right into the driveway just before the traffic circle) \nUsing Waze: https://waze.com/ul/hsv8zcjvhf \nUsing Google Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/teDPagS7GRUi5VzY8
