SUMMARY:Tiyul: Gaza Border\, Nova\, and Sderot: A Guided Journey of Remembrance
DESCRIPTION:Gaza Border\, Nova\, and Sderot: A Guided Journey of Remembrance\nTuesday 6 October \nOn October 7\, 2023\, Israel faced a tragic terrorist attack by Hamas in the Gaza Envelope\, resulting in the loss of about 1\,500 lives and the kidnapping of approximately 250 Israelis. Join us on a professional and informative tour as we visit some significant sites affected by this devastating event. This Tiyul offers firsthand insights into the history\, the aftermath of the massacre\, and the lasting impact of the attack. The itinerary includes visits to key sites that tell the harrowing yet inspiring story of survival\, bravery\, and unity. \nWe’ll begin our journey in Sderot\, a city that has suffered from rockets for 20 years\, where you’ll take in a panoramic view of the region as your guide shares the history and the significance of October 7. Then\, we’ll visit the Police Station Memorial\, a site that stands as a tribute to extraordinary acts of bravery and resilience. We’ll also pay our respects at the monument for the Lookout Tower Girls\, honouring those who were killed or kidnapped that day. \nNext\, we’ll visit the Nova Festival site and have a moment to reflect on those who lost their lives\, where their moments of joy were overshadowed by tragedy. From there\, we’ll stop at the lot of burned cars. This haunting memorial site reflects the sheer brutality of the massacre and stands as a powerful visual testament to the atrocities that took place. We’ll also make a brief stop at a bomb shelter near a bus stop—a stark symbol of daily life in this region. This specific shelter became a refuge for those fleeing the attack\, including Aner Shapira & Hersh Goldberg Polin\, whose stories have become a testament to courage in the face of terror. \nOur final stops will take us to a local kibbutz that experienced the October 7 attack where a resident will share a personal perspective\, providing a unique and intimate testimony. These once-thriving agricultural communities now face the monumental task of rebuilding – not guaranteed. \nPlease note\, the order of sites may differ from listed and not all are guaranteed. \nOur tour guide will be Yaron Hovav. \nPrices to follow \nDepart heading south\, first pick-up:\nYoung Israel 07:30\nReturn: approx. 18:30 \nPurchase tickets below  or call the box office 09-8330950. \nPlease call the box office to notify them of your pick-up point.

SUMMARY:Roby Simons: What’s with those Abandoned Buildings in Netanya?
DESCRIPTION:What’s with those Abandoned Buildings in Netanya?\nRoby Simons\n19:30 Sunday 11 October \nThere are several high-profile dead buildings in Netanya\, on the north side of the Kikkar\, south of the Kikkar right on the beach on Denker\, and the old hotel north of Blue Bay. They’ve been around for a decade or more. What were they at their peak? How did they get to their current situation? Why hasn’t that site been redeveloped\, and what can we expect in the future? I’ll apply a real estate and urban planning perspective to analyzing these sites. \nRobert A. Simons retired in 2024 after serving 34 years as a Professor of Real Estate and Urban Planning at the Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University in Cleveland\, Ohio. From 2020-2023\, he served as the Chair/Director of the School of Urban Affairs. He also supervised the graduate Certificate Program in Real Estate Development and Finance\, and directed the Master of Urban Planning\, Design and Development program. During Fall 2005\, Dr. Simons was a Fulbright Scholar at Wits University in Johannesburg\, South Africa. Dr. Simons received his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in City and Regional Planning\, with an emphasis in real estate. \nMembers Prepaid – NIS 40 \nNon-members and Members at the Door – NIS 60 \nPrepaid ticketing available until noon on the day of the event.
