SUMMARY:Book Club - The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson
DESCRIPTION:Book Club -The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson\nLed by Marcy Manas and Liz Morley\n16:00 Tuesday 28 July \nOur Book Talk meets once a month. Books are available to borrow from the Gura Family Memorial Library. \nIn 1936\, tucked deep into the woods of Troublesome Creek\, KY\, lives blue-skinned 19-year-old Cussy Carter\, the last living female of the rare Blue People ancestry. The lonely young Appalachian woman joins the historical Pack Horse Library Project of Kentucky and becomes a librarian\, riding across slippery creek beds and up treacherous mountains on her faithful mule to deliver books and other reading material to the impoverished hill people of Eastern Kentucky. Along her dangerous route\, Cussy\, known to the mountain folk as Bluet\, confronts those suspicious of her damselfly-blue skin and the government’s new book programme. She befriends hardscrabble and complex fellow Kentuckians\, and is fiercely determined to bring comfort and joy\, instill literacy and give to those who have nothing\, a bookly respite\, a fleeting retreat to faraway lands. \nMembers NIS 25      \nNon-members NIS 35 \nPurchase tickets below\, contact the Box Office 09-8330950 or pay at the door.

SUMMARY:Addiction and Alcoholism - Two Sides of the Same Coin
DESCRIPTION:Addiction and Alcoholism – Two Sides of the Same Coin \nPresented by Gaye Turiel and Paulette Woolf \n11:30 Sunday 9 August \nAddiction is a chronic\, progressive brain disorder and can be fatal. According to the latest data\, alcoholism is on the rise in Israel\, with kids starting to drink at younger and younger ages. The good news is that addictions are treatable. The main symptom of addiction is denial. Recovery helps addicts to develop healthy responses and attitudes. Here the person learns to deal with life on life’s terms dictated by the disease. Recovery is not a single event\, but a long and often difficult process. \nGaye Turiel will talk about the disease and recovery and the fallout and role of family as codependents in helping themselves and the afflicted person. \nPaulette Woolf will discuss the impact of alcoholism on society. She will describe her own personal journey – having achieved 17 years of sobriety to date. Most importantly\, she will advocate on behalf of the need for greater awareness of this disease at all levels of society\, including within the medical community. \nGaye Turiel\, B Soc Sci (Social Work) NAADAC (CERTIFIED ADDICTIONS COUNSELLOR) is the managing director of a consultancy specialising in female and male resilience\, and individual\, couple\, family and group interventions. \nPaulette served for 20 years in a number of senior capacities at the United Nations. In addition to her position as Director of Management Audit\, she successfully established and managed a global internal management consulting function. Paulette is a former Co-Chair of Netanya AACI where she served from 2020-2024. \nMembers pre-paid NIS 30                   \nMembers at door and non-members NIS 50 \nPurchase tickets below\, call the box office 09-8330950 or pay at the door. \nPrepaid ticketing ends at 08:00 on the day of this event.

SUMMARY:Dr. Lisel Badach: Alternative vs Conventional Medicines? Conflict or Cooperation? How to Choose?
DESCRIPTION:Alternative vs Conventional Medicines? Conflict or Cooperation?\nHow to Choose? \nDr. Lisel Badach \n1100 Sunday 6 September \nRather than fighting disease\, Alternative Medicine aims to heal in an holistic way\, treating body\, mind\, soul and spirit. Using both Gentle and Traditional Medicine\, Alternative to Medicine uses natural ways to boost energy\, reduce stress and heal. Dr. Badach will explain what this means and how it works\, and whether Conventional Medicine has lost sight of its mission to help humans back to health\, whilst concentrating on the disease rather than the person. As an MD she will discuss how she became an enthusiastic Alternative Medical Practitioner in tandem with her Conventional Medicine practice and remained true to herself. \nDr. Lisel Badach\, Physician MD\, has practiced privately and in hospitals in Paris\, France; New Jersey (University of Medicine and Dentistry)\, US; and Haifa. SUMMARY:50 Years Since "Operation Yonatan" (Entebbe Raid) and Three Years Since The October 7 Massacre – These Two Events are Connected in Many Ways
DESCRIPTION:50 Years Since “Operation Yonatan” (Entebbe Raid) and Three Years Since The October 7 Massacre – These Two Events are Connected in Many Ways\nPresented by Rami Sherman\n19:30 Tuesday 15 September \nDuring the Entebbe hostage rescue\, Rami Sherman was “Operations Officer” of the unit that performed the rescue. Why is it important to discuss this event 50 years later? What happened during the hijacking? What was the response\, in Israel and in the diaspora\, to the operation and what was the impact on the relations between the State of Israel and the world? Lastly\, how is the Entebbe hostage rescue connected to the October 7 massacre? Rami will talk about these questions and more. \nRami Sherman’s parents were Holocaust survivors who came to Israel in 1946. Rami grew up on Kibbutz Lehavot Habashan in the north of the country which is located only 500 meters from the Syrian border. In 1972\, he enlisted in the army and was accepted into an elite unit\, “Sayeret Matkal”. In 1976\, an Air France airliner was hijacked and rerouted to Entebbe. At that time\, he served as an “operation officer” of the unit under the command of Yoni Netanyahu z” l\, and in this position\, he was involved in preparing the operation. Rami was on the first Hercules that landed in Entebbe and took part in the fight in the old terminal to rescue the hostages. \nThis year\, 2026\, we marked the 50th anniversary commemorating “Operation Yonatan”. Rami flew to Entebbe as an Israeli and landed back in Israel as a Jew\, but it has taken him 40 years to realize what that means. Since 1990 he has worked as a physiotherapist for the Israeli Olympic team. In 1993\, his family moved to Kibbutz Maagan Michael. He is married and has two daughters and five grandchildren. \nMembers pre-paid NIS 40 \nMembers at door and non-members NIS 60 \nPrepaid tickets available until noon on the day of this event. \nPurchase tickets below\, call the box office 09-8330950 or pay at the door. \n  \nNearby Parking: (one block north of Netanya AACI\, approach from the north on Shmuel Hanatziv to turn right into the driveway just before the traffic circle) \nUsing Waze: https://waze.com/ul/hsv8zcjvhf \nUsing Google Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/teDPagS7GRUi5VzY8

SUMMARY:Tiyul: Gaza Border\, Nova\, and Sderot: A Guided Journey of Remembrance
DESCRIPTION:Gaza Border\, Nova\, and Sderot: A Guided Journey of Remembrance\nTuesday 6 October \nOn October 7\, 2023\, Israel faced a tragic terrorist attack by Hamas in the Gaza Envelope\, resulting in the loss of about 1\,500 lives and the kidnapping of approximately 250 Israelis. Join us on a professional and informative tour as we visit some significant sites affected by this devastating event. This Tiyul offers firsthand insights into the history\, the aftermath of the massacre\, and the lasting impact of the attack. The itinerary includes visits to key sites that tell the harrowing yet inspiring story of survival\, bravery\, and unity. \nWe’ll begin our journey in Sderot\, a city that has suffered from rockets for 20 years\, where you’ll take in a panoramic view of the region as your guide shares the history and the significance of October 7. Then\, we’ll visit the Police Station Memorial\, a site that stands as a tribute to extraordinary acts of bravery and resilience. We’ll also pay our respects at the monument for the Lookout Tower Girls\, honouring those who were killed or kidnapped that day. \nNext\, we’ll visit the Nova Festival site and have a moment to reflect on those who lost their lives\, where their moments of joy were overshadowed by tragedy. From there\, we’ll stop at the lot of burned cars. This haunting memorial site reflects the sheer brutality of the massacre and stands as a powerful visual testament to the atrocities that took place. We’ll also make a brief stop at a bomb shelter near a bus stop—a stark symbol of daily life in this region. This specific shelter became a refuge for those fleeing the attack\, including Aner Shapira & Hersh Goldberg Polin\, whose stories have become a testament to courage in the face of terror. \nOur final stops will take us to a local kibbutz that experienced the October 7 attack where a resident will share a personal perspective\, providing a unique and intimate testimony. These once-thriving agricultural communities now face the monumental task of rebuilding – not guaranteed. \nPlease note\, the order of sites may differ from listed and not all are guaranteed. \nOur tour guide will be Yaron Hovav. \nPrices to follow \nDepart heading south\, first pick-up:\nYoung Israel 07:30\nReturn: approx. 18:30 \nPurchase tickets below  or call the box office 09-8330950. \nPlease call the box office to notify them of your pick-up point.
