On Our Doorstep Tiyul: Of Algae and Herbs…

A day of learning about algae and herbs – we may not think about them too much, but they are vital to the earth and to our health!
We start our day at Bar Algae which is a high-tech cultivation facility for microalgae, situated at Kibbutz Gan Shmuel. It specializes in the production of various microalgae species. Bar Algae’s facility was established in 2017 and contains 30,000 meters of photo-bioreactor tubes for the production of microalgae and their by-products. We will tour the production facility and meet in the board room to hear about this innovative company.
Microalgae are a component of microscopic plankton found in both salt and freshwater. They can perform photosynthesis and they are vital for life on earth, producing about half of the atmospheric oxygen. In addition, they can produce by-products which can be utilized in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and as food additives.
We will return to our bus and drive to Yokneam to the visitors’ center of Bara Plants, home to hundreds of herbs from all over the world. After a refreshing cup of herbal tea, we will tour the herb garden, an oasis of harmony. We will get a glimpse into the production factory where the herbs undergo a fascinating process, using traditional methods and advanced technologies. Back in the visitors’ center we will hear about the different herbs and their uses, the secrets of herbal medicine throughout the ages and different ways to integrate herbs to promote a healthy way of life.
Participants of our tiyul will receive a 20% discount on purchases in the onsite shop.
