Coffee And…Flying High with Dan Sela
Speaker: Dan Sela
10.30am Sunday 4 June
Dan Sela, IAF Major, retired helicopter flight mechanic, was born in Israel in 1941. As a young boy he remembered the British Mandate days prior to the Declaration of Independence made by David Ben-Gurion, the first Prime Minister. During those days of the Holocaust, survivors were trying to be allowed entrance to then Palestine – Israel. The British authorities were rounding-up these miserable people, including babies, to send them to prisoner camps – either in Israel or in Cyprus. This left an impression on Dan’s soul and has been the reason for his sense of “Shlichut” – commitment – to serve our country and contribute to its security as well as to its well-being.
When Dan was thirteen, he joined the Aeroclub in his hometown, Afula, and the Youth Brigade’s branch of the air force. He later registered with the Israel Air Force Technical School in Haifa and started his career in aviation, graduated from the IAF Tech. School, in 1958, at the age of seventeen as a qualified jet aircraft mechanic, as well as of piston engines, professionally referred to as “Reciprocating Engines”. He enlisted with the Israeli Air-Force – IAF, in February 1959 and after boot-camp training was assigned to the first helicopter squadron of the IAF.
