Coffee And… With Dr. Ethel Scliar
Samba and Gefilte Fish: Jewish Communities in Brazil
10:30am Sunday 5 March
Join us to discover how Jews live in Brazil, the land of samba, carnival and soccer. Where did they come
from? What are they doing? How many and where are they? Brazil is a country with great diversity and
a multi-ethnic culture and Judaism has survived in this territory by adapting without losing its roots.
Dr. Ethel Scliar Cabral, Brazilian Jewish activist, will guide us on this adventure.
Ethel has a degree in Social Communication from the University of São Paulo and she holds a PhD from the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Human Sciences (UFSC, Federal University of Santa Catarina).
She is certified by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in the course Texts, Values and Technology in Jewish Education. She has an Extension course in Jewish Studies at UFRJ, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. She is the author of articles and books on citizenship, Judaism and ethics. She represents the Jewish community of Santa Catarina at inter-religious events and works to monitor and combat anti-Semitism. Ethel presents the online program Tuesday is Day D… about Jewish issues. She is the CEO of a publisher house.
