Sunday Morning Coffee and… Ireland – The UK’s Perennial Thorn

Ireland – The UK’s Perennial Thorn

Speaker: Raymond Cannon

10.30am Sunday 23 October

The history of Ireland is a microcosm of British colonialism and religious conflict (Catholic versus Protestant) that has evolved over centuries – when in 1169 King Henry II dispatched Anglo Normans to the island territory and almost 400 years later in 1543, reinforced when King Henry VIII declared himself Ireland’s King – right up to the present-day Brexit and former Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s controversial Northern Ireland Protocol.

The island of Ireland consists of The Republic of Ireland (a member of the EU) and Northern Ireland known as the 6 Counties, which is part of the United Kingdom and outside the EU a consequence of Brexit. In addition to the Northern Ireland Protocol issue – needed as there is no physical border – the power sharing government of Northern Ireland is deadlocked after the recent General Election won by Sein Fein (Catholics proponents of a united Ireland) and opposed by the Protestant, Democratic Union Party, opposed to the Protocol.

Raymond is a popular and well-known speaker (and debater) for Netanya AACI.

He will endeavor to explain and unravel the still unresolved situation that not only threatens the cohesion of the UK Government and the protection afforded by the Good Friday Agreement, but the critical UK/US relationship.
