Dakar Submarine –
Lecture with: Avi Ben Zeev (Zabo)
7.30pm Thursday 9 February – NOTE CHANGE OF DATE
The Dakar was an Israeli submarine which was lost at sea in 1968 with 69 submariners aboard.
The submarine was purchased by Israel from the Government of the United Kingdom in 1965. It was lost en–route to Israel on 25 January 1968. Despite extensive searches over the course of three decades, its wreckage was not found until 1999, when it was located between the islands of Cyprus and Crete.
The loss of the Dakar remains one of Israel’s worst nautical disasters: the reason for her loss has never truly been explained.
Zabo (Avi Ben Zeev) tells the story of the Dakar from first-hand experience.
He was an officer on the sub and was transferred to another one days before it left Portsmouth for its return to Haifa. The crew were his friends.
Zabo was a career Navy person, serving on bases and submarines for almost 30 years. During his service, he was the Commanding Officer of the INS Leviathan as well as Navy bases.
He participated in four wars: the Six Day War, the War of Attrition, the Yom Kippur War and the First Lebanon War. He retired from the Navy in 1990 with the rank of Aluf Mishne (Colonel).
