Darom Adom, Mosaics & More
Guide: Ben Zaltzman
Monday 20 February
This tiyul has been scheduled to see the anemones (kalaniyot) which bloom for only two weeks each February.
Our bus will head south towards the Gaza Border. After a coffee stop to refresh ourselves, we take a stroll in the fields near Kibbutz Nirim to see nature’s red carpet and the amazing spectacle of the sea of anemones. Remember your cameras!
Next, we will visit the Maon Synagogue, a 6th century synagogue and archaeological site, noted for its magnificent mosaic floor.
Following that we move onto the Black Arrow Monument (Hachetz Hashachor) which memorializes soldiers from the Paratroop Brigade who fell in the years leading up to the Sinai Campaign 1956. The monument looks over Gaza and we will hear about early and current battles in the area.
After a well-earned lunch break (own sandwiches) our final stop of the day will be at Moshav Netiv HaAsara to see the mosaic creation Path to Peace placed upon the border wall that divides the Gaza Strip and Israel, adjacent to the homes of the Moshav.
We will meet artist Tsameret Zamir who will tell us about life in the shade of the wall, the security situation, the good life in the Moshav and about staying optimistic and having hope for a peaceful future. Every visitor may write a personal wish on the back of a colorful mosaic piece and glue it onto the security wall.
Please bring a packed lunch.
