Exploring the Green Line

Monday 13 June

Guide: Joshua Koonin

The Green Line is the line that, following the war of 1948, separated Israel from Jordan and other Arab states. Post-1967 (with the exception of East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights) it has come to separate the areas over which Israel has and has not applied its sovereignty. Beyond the Green Line lie areas controlled by the Palestinian Authority, and which would presumably form the core of a future Palestinian state were it to be created, as well as Jewish communities (referred to as settlements by much of the international community) which seek to maintain Israeli control over the territory, and ultimately see Israel extend her sovereignty over it.

On this tour we will follow the Green Line (also known as the seam line) to see the extreme complexity these seemingly simple concepts entail.

Josh will meet us at Netanya AACI for an introductory explanation. (Pickups available if required.) Our bus will take us to see Jewish and Arab villages and settlements along the Green Line. We will meet soldiers and Palestinian workers on the Israeli side of a checkpoint. From Alefei Menashe we will enjoy incredible views of Gush Dan. At Barta we will meet Arab Israeli political analyst and co-existence activist Alfred Khoury and hear about this unique village.

Joshua Koonin is a licensed Israeli tour guide. He was born in South Africa and grew up in Australia. In Israel, Joshua developed International Political Seminars which guide senior political figures, foreign diplomats, journalists, and others on political visits to Israel as well as Palestinian Authority controlled territory.
