From Yemen to Netanya

Thursday 15 August

This morning’s Tiyul is sticking close to home at HaAtzmaut Square.

Join us as we discover the heritage and culture behind Yemenite Jewry. The Museum of Yemenite Jewish Heritage houses the cultural treasures of the Yemenite Jews who immigrated and settled in Netanya between 1949 and 1950. Go back in time and take a peek at their way of life through historic photos, an impressive display of antique jewellery brought over by the immigrants, and rich displays of the Yemenite way of life. A special section of the museum is also dedicated to Yemenite manuscripts that have been preserved for hundreds of years.

From there, it is not too far a walk to the Netanya City Museum which documents the history of the city. The city of Netanya was originally a Moshava of orchards and developed over the years until the realization of the founders’ vision to establish a resort town on the shores of the Mediterranean – a Riviera. Due to the city’s absorption of many immigrant families from the entire Diaspora, Netanya is a varied and fascinating human tapestry – a microcosm of Israeli society.
