Good for a Single Journey
Guest Speaker: Helen Joyce – canceled
Sunday 20 August
Helen Joyce will discuss her book, Good for a Single Journey, which has been awarded a Finalist Medal in the best first novel category of the 2023 Next Generation Indie Book Awards.
Her talk will focus on the legacy of trauma and the factors which led her to write the book.
The book follows the Speigel family who flee their home in Poland at the outbreak of WWI with their five children. The family scatters across Europe and Palestine as the Nazi menace looms. As Nazi horrors are unleashed, doors of refuge are slammed shut leaving most of the family trapped. Young and old perish; some escape, but the survivors pay a heavy price as they struggle to rebuild shattered lives.
The family is Helen Joyce’s own. Rather than a memoir, she has written what has been described as a turbulent and mesmerising saga of love, loss, despair, and hope spanning four generations. The book is based on painstaking research. The story weaves one family’s experiences into the fabric of Jewish 20th Century history and is intimately intertwined with the background of the early Yishuv and founding of the State of Israel.
Born in London in 1953 to Jewish refugees from Hitler’s Europe, Helen Joyce graduated from University College, London with BSc (Hons) in Psychology. After some years of clinical research and relationship counselling, Helen took up teaching and taught in colleges of Further Education in England.
Copies of the book will be available for purchase.
