Judge, Jury & Executioner: 20 years living on a bench

7.30pm Sunday 23 October – in Person and on Zoom

Guest Lecturer:  Laurence Seeff

Laurence Seeff trained as a statistician and had a varied career, culminating in him being a lecturer in financial regulation and investment.

Another aspect of his career was serving as a volunteer lay magistrate in London for many years. Although not a qualified lawyer, he sat as a judge in the lower criminal court, dealing with a whole range of crimes – some of which could attract a prison sentence of 12 months.

He had several roles including being a presiding justice (the one who gets to speak), a mentor and an appraiser. It is not obvious to many, including English but especially non-English people, how a part-time, volunteer, non-lawyer can possibly be entrusted to act as a judge, without a jury, and then pass sentence on the guilty.

Laurence will explain the history of the English magistracy, discuss how the current system works and throw in some stories and anecdotes from his 20 years ‘living on a bench’.
