Nefesh Yehudi: The Jewish Soul in Music and Words
A unique multi-media programme

by Harvey Bordowitz

19:30 Tuesday 9 January

The Jewish soul, in joy and sorrow, in devotion and ecstasy, has been given voice in music over the centuries. Jewish as
well as non-Jewish composers fell under the spell of prayers, folksongs and chassidic niggunim. We will celebrate this
Jewish music, from classic to klezmer.

The multi-media (audio/video) programme “Nefesh Yehudi” is a heartwarming experience which has been
enthusiastically received both in Israel and abroad. It includes cantorial, chassidic and klezmer music, two
versions of “Chad Gadya” (one of them in Italian!), Shlomo Carlebach, and Soviet Jewish underground protest songs.

All this is accompanied by tales and anecdotes about Chassidim and Mitnagdim, and about the Jew’s relationship
to God – and all in search of the Jewish soul.

Harvey Bordowitz has been esteemed as one of this country’s most innovative and creative conductors and music directors, and has guest-conducted orchestras throughout the world.

For over 40 years he has lectured in both Hebrew and English on a vast range of musical topics, with humor, erudition and a deep love of music. Harvey’s music lectures are very popular with Netanya AACI members.
