The Northern Borders

Tuesday 22 June

Guide: Joshua Koonin

Departing Netanya, we will travel to Metullah. There participants will be briefed on the history of the security situation in Lebanon. We will visit the border and meet with a former member of the South Lebanese (Phalangist) Army who escaped into Israel as Israeli forces withdrew, and now lives in Metullah.

From Metullah, we will continue across the Hula Valley and into the Golan Heights passing through the Druze village of Masaade where we will discuss the plight of the Druze in the Golan Heights. We will then ascend Mount Ben Tal overlooking the Syrian border.  At Mount Ben Tal, we will discuss the situation that Israel faces in Syria (including in regard to Iranian entrenchment), the ongoing ramifications of the Syrian civil war for Israel, and the background to Syrian politics today.

Our final stop will be at the former Island of Peace on the Israeli Jordanian border. There, we will see the memorial to the seven massacred Israeli students; we will discuss Israeli-Jordanian and Jordanian Palestinian relations, and Israel’s concerns on the Jordanian frontier.

Joshua Koonin is a licensed Israeli tour guide.

He was born in South Africa and grew up in Sydney, Australia working for and on the campaigns of senior ministers in the Australian government including a former Prime Minister. On arrival in Israel, Joshua developed International Political Seminars which guides senior political figures, foreign diplomats, journalists and lay leaders (as well those simply interested – like us) on political visits in Israel as well as Palestinian Authority controlled territory.
