Tiyul: Agriculture & Innovation
Wednesday 30 October
Have you ever wondered: who trained the first group of Israeli farm workers to self sustain a settlement? Or where the “Davidka” mortar was developed? Or how Israel became “The Start-Up Nation”?
Today we will travel to Holon where we will get a better understanding of what agricultural practices there were in Israel in 1870. Mikveh Israel was established then as an educational institution where thousands of young Jews (in the early days, mainly immigrants) could learn agriculture before leaving to establish villages and settlements all over the country and to “make the desert blossom”. Over the years the school has introduced new methods of agricultural training and served as the research centre for the country. Most of the agricultural know-how of the first 50 years has been collected and published by Mikveh Israel.
After enjoying your packed lunch al-fresco style, we will journey on to the Peres Centre for Peace and Innovation. The centre presents the incredible story of Israel, the Innovation Nation, and showcases the diverse fields and people behind Israeli innovation. We will have a unique opportunity to visit the office of the late President Shimon Peres and to discover the story behind the man who was a part of Israel from the day it was founded until it flourished as the globally recognized innovation nation.
