Unsung Heroes of Jewish History II
Guest Speaker: Prof. Jack S. Cohen
10:30 Thursday 14 March
In person and on Zoom
After having published “Unsung Heroes of Jewish History” in 2021, Jack Cohen was keenly aware that he had left out some very appropriate people who deserved to be included. He gradually began collecting their names and information without a specific plan to produce a second volume, but rather so as not to forget them. By definition, these were individuals, Jews, and some non-Jews, who had made major contributions to Jewish history, most of them in heroic ways, who were nevertheless obscure and all but forgotten.
Jack went ahead and did the required background work, collecting biographical information, making a list, revising the list, adding and subtracting names, until he felt that he had a suitable mix. The idea is not only not to leave anyone out who is deserving, but to achieve a good mix, including women and sportsmen as well as the obvious atomic physicists.
He has not included anyone who is really famous, whose name is a household word and whose contributions are well known. Jack’s focus is on less well known and even obscure individuals who made important contributions to Jewish history and whose contributions deserve to be remembered. His aim is to rescue them from obscurity. In that respect, in the current volume, he includes a section on Jewish soldier heroes of WWII.
