Wells and Warfare
Tuesday 8 August
Our first stop of the day is at Beit HaBe’er, a remnant of the “Pardes HaGadud” farm which specialized in growing orchards and was established in 1927 by five partners from Israel and abroad. The well was dug in 1928. The farm was built as a square yard and on its eastern side stood Beit HaBe’er. Orchards were planted around the compound. The farm existed as an independent settlement with several families and a school. Until the establishment of the State, the farm and orchards were used as a base for “defense” operations and hiding immigrants. The “Well House” is currently used as a museum of the history of Netanya 1928-1948, a period of 20 years, in which the city was in the status of a colony.
We will continue on to the Beit Hagdudim Museum located in Moshav Avichail where we will take a break for coffee and cake before entering the museum.
The museum tells the experiences of Jews who volunteered for the British Army in the two World Wars. It was founded in 1961 by the veterans of the Jewish battalions from the First World War and recounts the spirit of Jewish heroism and volunteerism.
