Addiction and Alcoholism – Two Sides of the Same Coin

Addiction is a chronic, progressive brain disorder and can be fatal. According to the latest data, alcoholism is on the rise in Israel, with kids starting to drink at younger and younger ages. The good news is that addictions are treatable. The main symptom of addiction is denial. Recovery helps addicts to develop healthy responses and attitudes. Here the person learns to deal with life on life’s terms dictated by the disease. Recovery is not a single event, but a long and often difficult process.
Gaye Turiel will talk about the disease and recovery and the fallout and role of family as codependents in helping themselves and the afflicted person.
Paulette Woolf will discuss the impact of alcoholism on society. She will describe her own personal journey – having achieved 17 years of sobriety to date. Most importantly, she will advocate on behalf of the need for greater awareness of this disease at all levels of society, including within the medical community.
Gaye Turiel, B Soc Sci (Social Work) NAADAC (CERTIFIED ADDICTIONS COUNSELLOR) is the managing director of a consultancy specialising in female and male resilience, and individual, couple, family and group interventions.
Paulette served for 20 years in a number of senior capacities at the United Nations. In addition to her position as Director of Management Audit, she successfully established and managed a global internal management consulting function. Paulette is a former Co-Chair of Netanya AACI where she served from 2020-2024.
