The Power and Dangers of Online Speech with Emily Schrader
19:30 Tuesday 14 January
An in-depth look at how social media is being used for social good…and bad. This lecture will examine how social media is being used as a tool of disinformation by individuals, organisations, and even states. It will examine online hate speech and anti-Semitism in a post-October 7th world and will look at the role of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Qatar in narrative shaping on social media.
Emily Schrader is an American-Israeli journalist, political analyst and specialist on Iranian affairs — particularly Tehran’s proxy terror groups and the regime’s disinformation campaigns. Despite having been targeted and threatened by the Iranian regime repeatedly, Emily has advised lawmakers worldwide on Iran policy, sits on the executive board of the Institute for Voices of Liberty, and is one of the leading experts on Iran-Israel relations in Israel. Emily has also advised social media companies and lawmakers around the world on policies to combat online hate speech and disinformation. Her book, 10 Things Every Jew Should Know Before Going to College, will be released in December 2024. Emily is the host of ILTV’s Viewpoint and co-host of The Quad on JNS.
