Think Before You Click! Scams and How to Avoid Them

According to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center’s annual reports, scammers stole a record $16.6 billion in 2024. That marked a 33% increase from 2023. More than a quarter million complainants reported money lost to a scam, with an average loss of more than $19,000. More importantly, according to Rockland Trust, the average loss among people over the age of 60 was $83,000, more than four times the average overall loss in 2024.
The con artists are becoming ever more sophisticated. The top 5 scams are: Job Scams,
E-commerce Scams, Fake Friend Scams, Phishing Scams, and Investment Scams. If you are unfamiliar with these terms, you need to attend this lecture! In this session, Melissa Dubinsky and Paulette Woolf will highlight the many types of scams to which one can fall prey through phone, email, Facebook and even WhatsApp. They provide practical tips on how to recognise and avoid being fooled by these scams.
Melissa Dubinsky began volunteering at Netanya AACI almost from the moment she made Aliyah with her husband from Pittsburgh almost nine years ago. Her global professional life has been focused on environmental impacts, hazardous wastes, risk assessments, safe site selection for nuclear power plants, and other important areas.
Paulette Woolf served for 20 years in a number of senior capacities at the United Nations. In addition to her position as Director of Management Audit, she successfully established and managed a global internal management consulting function. Paulette, together with Melissa, are former Co-Chairs of Netanya AACI where they served from 2020-2024.
