From Sea Turtles to Secret Ships
Tuesday 1 December
Join us for an interesting and educational day combining nature conservation with a fascinating chapter of Israel’s history.
Our first stop is the National Sea Turtle Rescue Centre near Mikhmoret. We will learn about efforts to protect endangered sea turtles along Israel’s Mediterranean coastline. The centre treats injured and sick turtles harmed by fishing equipment, plastic pollution, boat strikes and other human activities. Discover how these remarkable creatures are rescued, rehabilitated and, whenever possible, returned to the sea, as well as the challenges they face and how we can help protect marine life.
We will then continue to Haifa and the Clandestine Immigration and Naval Museum, which tells the story of Jewish immigration to Mandatory Palestine during the British Mandate and the development of Israel’s naval forces. Through photographs, historical documents, exhibits and restored vessels, we will discover the daring efforts to bring Holocaust survivors and other Jewish refugees to their ancestral homeland despite British restrictions. A highlight is the immigrant ship Af Al Pi Chen, illustrating the hardships and determination of those who undertook these dangerous voyages.
This memorable outing combines environmental awareness, maritime heritage and inspiring stories of courage, sacrifice and perseverance that helped shape the State of Israel.
