The Wandering Jew in Cinema – The Never-Ending Adaptation of the Israelites to a New Environment

Guest Speaker: Ron Fogel

19:30 Sunday 27 July

The history of the Jewish people is ultimately the story of two thousand years of exile and an endless encounter with a new and unfamiliar environment while undergoing an intense self-reflection. In this lecture, we will examine how cinema presented these encounters of the Jew with an environment unfamiliar to him. We will also examine what happened after the Jewish state was established. Did this end the wanderings of the Jew who became an Israeli? Or was he also destined to encounter conflicts familiar from his past in exile within his own state? Excerpts from the films “Hester Street”, “The Frisco kid”, “Salah Shabtai”, “The End of the World Left”, and more will be screened.

Ron Fogel is a popular lecturer and a senior film critic for “Kan” broadcasting company (TV and radio). He is an academic adviser to the MA Interdisciplinary Programme for Culture and Film Studies at the University of Haifa, Israel. Ron is President of the Fipresci Jury, Cannes Film Festival 2021, a member of the Board of the Israeli Academy of Film and Television and also a member of the European Film Academy. He is an International Voter for the Golden Globes.
