Harley Zipori – The Cassini-Huygens Mission: A Voyage of Discovery
19:30 Sunday 8 March
The planet Saturn is the jewel in the crown of the solar system. Situated in the remote reaches of the solar system, far from the Sun, Saturn has been a planet of mystery, drawing the attention of astronomers ever since Galileo discovered the rings with his telescope.
NASA’s Cassini spacecraft orbited Saturn for over a decade, exploring the planet and its moons and making truly astounding discoveries that changed the way we think of planets and objects that orbit them. Cassini carried the Huygens probe that landed on Saturn’s moon Titan, the first ever landing on any body in the outer solar system.
Come join us for a voyage of discovery of how this marvelous feat was accomplished and what Cassini told us about Saturn, its moons and its phenomenal ring system.
Armed with a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering and an MS in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT, Harley started working at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab in 1978. He spent most of his time there working on the Galileo spacecraft that eventually orbited Jupiter. Harley made Aliyah in 1981 and worked in the technology sector until retiring in 2019. He has been living in Netanya since 1984. He has an ongoing passion for all things astronomical and loves sharing it with others.
